Edward "Duke" Root Obituary

Edward “Duke” Newton Root, of Medora, passed on the morning of February 2, 2022, at Baptist Health Floyd of New Albany. He was 82 years old.

Duke entered this life on September 18, 1939, in London, Kentucky. He was the fifth born to the loving parents of Delbert and Sintha (Norton) Root. He was the brother to Homer, Oma, Earl, Lonny, Pauline, and Jacqueline. On March 18, 2000, at the Carr Township Conservation club, he was united in marriage to Janet (Edwards) Root.

Duke spent most of his life in Jackson County, never travelling far from home. He was an outdoorsman. On the weekends he would be found out throwing horseshoes, but rabbit hunting was his favorite sport, he could also be found next to a pond fishing and drinking a cold Bud Light. He loved watching his IU teams play sports. Didn’t matter which sport, as long as it was his IU playing. He loved his NASCAR and looked forward to racing season every year.

Edward was a devoted husband, a loving father, and Papaw. He was a man of many trades. He worked for the Lawrence County Road Department and then later the Medora Brick Plant. He was also a side contract roofer and after the plant shut down, he went to work for Seymour Housewares until his retirement.

Surviving to cherish his memories, his wife of 21 years, Janet Root of Medora, his children, Rick Root and his wife Teresa of Clear Spring, Mary Bowman of Seymour, Sue White of Brownstown, Dean Root and his wife Anita of Seymour, Tony Root and his wife Sally of Vallonia, Eddie Root, Jr. and his wife Wanda of Vallonia, Tina Bowers and her husband Junior A of Medora, Roy Edwards of Medora, Amy Hanners of Seymour, and Coby Root of Medora, thirty-two grandchildren. And many great-grandchildren, a brother Lonny Root of Brownstown, and a sister Pauline Marsh of Easyville.

He was preceded by his parents, two brothers, Earl Root and Homer Root, and two sister Oma Land, and Jacqueline Jones.
