Emil Gibson Obituary

Emil Houston Gibson, of Indianapolis, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on the day of our Lord’s resurrection of Easter on April 9, 2023. He was 105.                                    Emil entered this life on February 13, 1918, is Sparksville, Indiana. He was the son of Orrill and Dora Ella (Reynolds) Gibson, and the brother to Paul, Lyman, Hubert, Irvin, Norman and Freda. Emil grew up in the Sparksville area and was a graduate of Medora Community Schools, Class of 1936.  On July 22, 1940, he was united in marriage to Mary Louise (Sons) Gibson in Seymour. From this union of over 64 years, Emil and Mary were blessed with two children, Ron and Marta. Mary preceded on May 29, 2004.  After graduating high school, Emil went into the construction trade as a heavy equipment operator. His crew helped construct the new highway 50 through the knobs on the way to Bedford.  His construction skills led him to specialize in building airports and runways during World War II. After the war, his construction projects allowed him to move to different parts of Indiana, Ohio, New York, Newfoundland, and Cambodia, with his family along the way.  During this time Emil earned his pilot’s license. His flying became his passion. He was able to land his plane on some of the runways he had built.  He wanted to see the world and visit many countries.  Emil was able to fly around the world twice. Emil and Mary settled in Bloomington where they started the E & M Mobile Manor Home Park. Not long after this Emil also joined the local volunteer fire department. While serving in the fire department, he was offered a job as a local dispatcher. He would later serve for Ellettsville Fire Department.

Emil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of the Medora Masonic Lodge #328, and he went on to earn his 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite.

He will be missed by his loving family, children, Ron Gibson of Greenfield, IN, and Marta Orwig and her husband Don of Corunna, IN, four grandchildren, Kathy Gibson, Marta Gibson, Criss Lilac and her husband Aaron, and Jonathon Gibson, five great-grandchildren Tyler, Kyle, Matt, Emma, and Caitlin, and two great-great-grandchildren, Braylee and Evan, and several nieces and nephews.

 Masonic Funeral Rites will be conducted at 12:30 pm on Saturday prior to the service at Hague Funeral Home.

Funeral Service will be conducted at Hague Funeral Home on Saturday April 15, 2023, at 1:00 pm with Pastor Stan Thomas officiating. He will be buried in Proctor Cemetery – Dixon Chapel of Lawrence County.

Friends may visit at Hague Funeral Home on Saturday after 11:00am until time of the service.
