Evelyn Darkis, age 75, of Norman passed away peacefully at IU Hospital of Bedford with her loving family by her side on February 23, 2019 at 7:11 pm.
Evelyn was born on March 21, 1943 in Kurtz, Indiana to the late Lester and Ethel (Adams) Hanner. She was a graduate of Medora High School. On March 4, 1959 she married the love of her life, Charles (Chuck) Darkis at the historic Carr High School of Weddleville.
She was a loving mother and Mamaw to her family, but most of all she loved being an Army Wife to Chuck. Evelyn loved history and was able to travel and learn the historic significance of each of the Army bases where Chuck would be stationed. In October of 1959, they were stationed at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. This is where her first daughter Vanessa Lyn was born. Her next assignment as an Army Wife was at Ft. Knox and this is where her second daughter Jackie was born. Evelyn then went with Chuck to Heidelburg, Germany where she once drank a beer with George Jones. She often shared this memory with her friends and family. After many other assignments, she finished out her time as an Army Wife with Chuck in Washington DC. Then she returned home to her beloved family farm in Norman, Indiana.
For the last 20 years, she ran the beauty shop at Stone Bridge health care facility in Bedford, Indiana where she had may friends.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of almost 65 years, two daughters: Vanessa Lyn (Patrick) Wright and Jackie (Rick) DeCroes, two grandchildren: Holly Ann (Gavin) Hammerlein and Jacob (Alyssa) DeCroes; three great-grandchildren: Harper Grace, Charlee Faith, and Grayson Parker; and a sister Judith Atkins.
A Funeral Service will be held at Hague Funeral Home of Medora at 11:00 am on Tuesday February 26, 2019 with Dick Clampett officiating.
Burial will be at Weddleville Cemetery
Family and friends may call at Hague Funeral Home after 9:00 am until time of the service.
