James Michael Stephens, of Brownstown, passed away on the night of July 2, 2023, at Schneck Medical Center of Seymour. He was 78 years old.
Mike entered this life on June 4, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born to the late Benjamin and Ruth (Smith) Stephens. Mike grew up in Russell Springs, Kentucky, before his family moved to Johnson County, Indiana around the Edinburgh area. Mike heard the call to serve his nation and volunteered to serve in the US Army. He served three tours in Vietnam as a medic corpsman. After serving in the US Army, he returned home and became a butcher. He became a meat manager for Kolfers in Edinburgh, a meat manager at IGA of Edinburgh, and then went to work for Krogers meat market until his retirement.
Mike was a devoted husband. He was united in marriage to Ethel “Sally” (Abner) Stephens on March 7, 1991, in Brownstown. Sally preceded on April 16, 2014, He was a loving father and Papaw.
Mike was an avid outdoorsman. If there was a season of hunting, Mike hunted it. He loved squirrel hunting, deer hunting, and looked forward to every spring for mushroom hunting. When he wasn’t hunting, he was fishing either from the bank or out on his boat. He was a member of the Pikes Peak Church of Christ of Brown County; he was baptized in this church.
Mike’s memories will be cherished by his family, children: David Wilson of Shelbyville, IN, Lisa Barnett and her husband Randy of Brownstown, Ruth Stephens of Indianapolis, Bengy Stephens of Seymour, and Gregory Stephens and his wife Michelle of Seymour, grandchildren, Chad Wilson and his wife Shayna, Amber Wilson and her fiancé Jake Maschino, Trent Wilson and his girlfriend Alyssa, Sarah Williams, Adam Scott, Jon Luenebrink and his wife Kelley, Anthony Lunebrink, Natasha Campbell and her wife Kate, Kaleb Stephens, Kyia Stephens, Zachery Stephens and his wife Sarah, and Shelby Johnson and her husband James, and 22 great-grandchildren, a brother David Stephens of Cincinnati, sisters, Maggie Whitlock, Marilyn Stephens, and Ellen Arnett and her husband Ronnie all of Edinburgh and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by two brothers, Lawrence Stephens and Mitchell Stephens, four sisters Donna Skaggs, Vonzie Burton, Sheila McKee, and Glenna Fay Stephens, and a grandson Michael Allen Burton.
Funeral Service will be conducted on Friday July 7, 2023, at 5:00 pm at Hague Funeral Home of Medora with Deacon Mike East officiating.
Mike’s Final Salute will be presented by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American legion Post 89, Disabled American Vets 47, and the Vietnam Vets 7.
Burial will be private.
Friends may call at Hague Funeral Home on Friday from 2:00 pm until the time of the service at 5 pm.
Memorials may be written in Mike’s name to the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1925.
