John William Hughes, of North Vernon, passed away peacefully on the late evening of April 25, 2024, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana with his wife by his side. He was 77 years old.

John entered this life on September 3, 1946, in Seymour, Indiana. He was the only child born to Joe K. and Vera May (Koepper) Hughes.  He grew up in Medora. He was a valedictorian of his class and graduated from Medora Community Schools, class of 1964. John left Medora and went to Milligan College in east Tennessee where he met his future bride at the cafeteria line. On September 2, 1967, in Painesville, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Sue (Schooley) Hughes. This union of over 56 years was blessed with a son Johnny.

John had a servant’s heart and enjoyed helping people. He graduated from Milligan College with a degree in psychology and secondary in education. He started teaching math in Tennessee before moving back to Indiana to teach in Columbus. His love to serve called him to become a counselor. John became a mental health Specialist, and Vocation Rehab Counselor. He was a guidance counselor for Southwest School in Hanover. He furthered his education by earning his master’s in counseling from Butler University. John served on many boards in the church and communities. He was an elder at Christ Way Church and elder at Medora Christian Church. He served on the Medora Community School Board for a number of years. He was called and he served.

He was a devoted husband, father, and Papaw.  He would love to travel. Even when his doctors would say he could not, he still did, regardless of his health battle. But most of all he loved to watch his two grandchildren grow and become parents also.

John memories will be cherished by wife, Sue Hughes of North Vernon, John C. Hughes of Medora, grandchildren Brittany Fordice of North Vernon, and Jonathan Hughes of North Vernon, and five great-grandchildren, Alexis Hughes, twins Reileh and Raelyn Hughes, Myles Fordice and Colton Fordice, and lots of friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at Medora Christian Church on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 1:00 pm with Pastor Stan Thomas officiating and Pastor Marcus Speer officiating.

Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery

Visitation will be at Medora Christian Church on Tuesday, April 30, from 11:00 – 1:00 pm.

Memorials may be written in John’s name to Medora Christian Church or Jennings Church of Christ

Final wishes have been entrusted to Hague Funeral Home of Medora.
