Obituary

Lawrence ( Larry ) Holbrook, of Medora passed away peacefully at the Hoosier Christian Village on the morning of September 22. 2020. He was 80 years old.

Larry entered this life on May 5, 1940 in Monona County, Iowa. He was the loving son of Eli and Hazel (Ramsey) Holbrook. He was a graduate of Onawa High School, and following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. He was a Paratrooper and a member of the famed 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles”. He served through the Cuban missile crisis, and then later to serve and protect on the front lines of the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

It was in Clarksville, Tennessee while stationed at Ft. Campbell in 1962 that he was united in marriage to Billie Faye (Seay) Holbrook. From this union of 50 years he was blessed with two children, Joseph and Barbara. Larry had a sense of humor in saying he was just passing through Medora when his car broke down, and he never left. Billie preceded him on December 21, 2012

Larry was a loving and proud father. He was a roofer for over 50 years. He gave up roofing a few times to try his hand at other endeavors before realizing roofing was where he belonged. He took pride in roofing and from time to time he would drive by his old jobs, just to check on his roofs to see how they were enduring over the years. He worked hard to provide his family with a better life, so his children would have better opportunities that Larry had growing up.

Larry enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to music, shooting, drinking Blue Ribbon Beer, watching old westerns, and spending time with his family.

Surviving to cherish his legacy, his son Joseph Holbrook and his wife Marla of Brownsburg, IN, his daughter, Barbara Bluedorn and her husband Todd of Dallas, Texas, four granddaughters, Cassandra, Amanda Jo, Jessica, and Emily, and a brother George Holbrook and his wife Verna of Summersville, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Charlie Holbrook, Vick Holbrook, and Frank Holbrook, and three sisters Dorothy Copeland, Grace Hogancamp, and Pat Fore.
