Leon Franklin Pope, of Medora, passed away peacefully in the late afternoon of Saturday February 25, 2023, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was 80 years old.
Leon entered this life on November 22, 1942, in Bisbee, AZ. the first born to Maurice and RD (Matlock) Pope. He was the brother to Ronnie and Mary. Leon grew up in Brawley, California. With special permission of his mother, Leon joined the US Marine Corp at the age 17. After his discharge, he briefly served as a police officer, before going to work as a supervisor on a farm. While farming he met his love of his life Vickie (Myers) Pope. They were united in marriage on October 1, 1979, in Las Vegas. Together they raised four children, Jason, Tony, Ronetta and Jacob. He was later asked to be a supervisor at UNOCAL 76 Electric Company in California. He was also a heavy equipment crane operator. After his retirement he moved to Medora where he was able enjoy retirement with his wife.
He was a devoted husband for over 47 years. He was a loving father, and Poppy to his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion Post 60 of Brawley, CA and the Moose Lodge of Seymour.
Leon’s memories will be forever cherished by his wife Vickie Pope pf Medora, Jason Pope of California, Tony Lane of Minnesota, Ronetta “Chickey” Lane of Medora, and Jacob Pope of California, grandchildren, Haylee Pope, Kayden Pope, Joshua Lane, James Lane, Christopher Lane, Brandon Lane, Christina Lane, Natasha Lane, Reagan Lane and Jacob Pope, Jr., and 9 great-grandchildren, and sister Mary Reynolds of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ronnie Pope, and a grandson Cody Lane.
A gathering of friends will be announced in the spring.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to Hague Funeral Home of Medora.
